1914 GP VAUXHALL

Handmade ceramic stoneware sculpture

NOT FOR SALE

Designed by Laurence Pomeroy for the I.O.M TT and the French GP, it was a bold engineering exercise, but due mainly to poor preparation, none of the team cars completed either event.

.

Expected, with high revving engines, to out-accelerate the opposition in France, they inexplicably staggared off the line,  to limp on doggedly until one-by-one they petered out. Years later, during WW1, it was remembered that the fuel tanks had not been re-pressurised before the race! In the years after the War they were overwhelmingly the most successful cars at Brooklands, easily outclassing their pre-war competitors.

The piece depicts A J Hancock, with riding mechanic Gibbs, valiantly pressing on in the I.O.M. TT, until weakening dampers caused the car to leave the road and overturn.
